Just installed Service Pack 2 for Vista x64 bit on my main work machine. Took about 20 minutes to install through Windows Update. I normally avoid upgrading the service packs on Windows installs because through experience they are many times very unstable but this time I didn't really feel like reformatting and installing a slipstreamed copy of Vista again. Still this time the experience was very quick and all I had to do was replace my uxtheme.dll files after I finished installing the service pack to get my themes back up.

RE: Artician's policy towards "Free Speech" and "Censorship" & Myself

Started as a comment reply to this blog post by Ben Heine.

Artician's job is to provide creative individuals a way to present their work. It is not to police the Internet. We only remove content in any form for being spam, illegal in the USA (hey, our servers are here), or for Copyright Infringement.

We take the approach that we are more of a host rather then a police of content so we will not remove anything for simply being offense to a single person. If you have multiple Admins who can be the judge, jury, and executioner of kicks/bans you will see a situation in which the various volunteers (and/or paid staff) of a website begin to develop their own moral compass on whether or not something must be removed or not.

I believe that if there's simply a solid, rigid rule that no content is removed except for complete, defined, reasons (like above) then you will see less of this type of thing happening.

Then again, why should you believe what I say?
The answer is simple: because I am a student of history. I know what Free Speech is. I know what Censorship is. I know the exact definitions of capitalism, communism, socialism, fascism, and I definitely know what a police state is. I also would like to think that I have a pretty decent grasp of how human nature works. With that being said, as long as I am part of the development team: I will continue to promote an atmosphere of intelligent debate, equal rights, and the freedom to say what you want without retribution on the part of the staff.

On top of this my world view is shaped not only by my knowledge of history but also from my background. I was born in Ukraine in 1987 under the former Soviet Union. Today, I'm an American citizen with extended family members in Germany and Israel as well as the United States. Even today though, despite having all my education in the US (school to college), I still speak to my grandparents in Russian. I can honestly say that because I know history, despite having been only 4 years old when the USSR collapsed, I am eternally grateful for that fact. And because I know all of this, I am tolerant of views that are contrary to my own, even if I disagree.

Having said all of this, it might be a good time to end this blog entry but there's still something I need to point out.
Artician has areas that are considered "public" and there's also that which is considered "private". For this reason while we may not delete an artwork submitted, we might decide to unlist it from Browse, Explore, or any other public listing. Likewise we might remove a forum post or thread if it offends specific people. This is because these areas are public and also because in public we need to show some restraint in provoking random visitors. On your own subdomain, however, you represent yourself and as such should be responsible for the content. So as long as it's not Spam, Illegal, or Copyright Infringing we will continue to tolerate it even if we disagree with it's content. Because removing your digital voice is like denying you to your digital habeas corpus.

Sweet! Finally I can debug in OS X

I'm constantly on the look out for new ways in which I can debug web design better. These days it's getting harder and harder to do that since the browser war and the operating system war has started to expand. Today it looks like we will never again see the days of the single browser dominating the Internet. Artician in particular sees one fifth of it's traffic come from the OS X platform, 2% from Linux, and the rest from various flavors of Windows. When we look at browsers the stats get even more colorful. Firefox dominates with 64% of the Artician market share. Internet Explorer comes in at a shrinking 16% and Safari continues to expand it's growing 9%.

When we combine the OS and the Browser into pairs all of a sudden all majorities are lost. Firefox on Windows come in at just under 50% followed by IE on Windows with 16% and then Firefox and Safari split the OS X share at 13% and 8%.

So having to be able to support OS X when the buy in for the operating system includes the hardware is a deal breaker for us since we are a startup. Luckily the VMWare community comes through with a way to run OS X in VMWare.

So here it is, Artician on OS X 10.5.5. :)

So Mozilla has released an alpha of their new Mobile Firefox dubbed "Fennec".

What do you guys think?

The software war is definitely on for the phone platform! We're gonna start seeing a convergence of phone hardware since both operating systems are Unix based so that will hopefully drive down prices. The fun part is that now we get to see Google and Apple duke it out. This should be interesting. Especially considering the stakes are who will control the Phone OS market for the next 20 years like Microsoft has owned the past 20.

The challenge is now out for web developers to step up and capitalize.

Looks like Firefox 3 is very close to RC1

I don't really like to take sides in the browser wars. As a developer I like to build sites that work on all browsers and if I find a bug in any given browser I do go and attempt to track it down and fix it. Having said that I believe that at the moment Firefox 3 is both a superior browser to IE7 and Firefox 2 on the Windows platform for anyone who has more then 1GB of memory. If you have less then 1GB IE7 is probably still superior because it has a higher CPU usage while taking up less RAM.

Since Firefox 3 went into public beta I've been using it as my main browser and I've been anxiously awaiting Firefox 3 to be finished. I've been using it as my main cause I got fed up with Firefox 2 hitting 200MB of memory followed by ridiculous CPU usage which tended to require me to restart the browser every 2 hours because of how much of a heavy browser I am. So for the past couple months I've been dealing with Firefox 3 beta as my main browser with all it's glorious crashes, bugs, and other annoyances and yet for some reason I still felt it was better then using Firefox 2. Since it's been a month since the previous release I went digging into the development of it and since the Mozilla foundation is such a transparent organization (Open Source) I found out a lot.

Mozilla has a wiki which has a Firefox 3 page. The Mozilla development team has a weekly status meeting on Tuesdays which helps summarize the progress being made and the dev team puts out a daily build of the current code base of the browser which lets anyone try it out. You can also view the current status of bugs. The dev team refers to bugs as "blockers" because they block release. As of today there are only 12 blockers left to fix, only one of which is a critical bug and none of the ones left cause anything serious like a crash. This is a huge contrast to Beta 5 which when released on April 2nd had 140 blockers remaining (as of April 1st status meeting). This essentially means that in the month of time since then the development team has fixed probably more then 200 bugs (because other bugs creep up as old ones are fixed). I'm happy to say that I'm writing this blog on the daily build of Firefox as of April 2nd and I highly recommend you guys try it out. Beta 5 used to crash on me quite a bit but I'm happy to say that the current nightly build hasn't crashed on me at all so far and it looks very solid.

If you wanna try the nightly build go to,
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

You can either run the install like normal or you can download the zip and copy the Firefox directory inside the zip to any folder on your hard drive. The nightly builds are called "Minefield" so don't be surprised when you open it up and you get a different icon from the familiar orange Firefox logo. This is done on purpose so you can tell the difference between an official release and an internal beta build.

It will automatically detect and attempt to use the profile you already have setup on your computer for Firefox so you might wanna make a backup of your profile by going into,
C:\Documents and Settings\{Your username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\

Make a backup of the profile with the .default suffix.

You can also choose to make a copy of the profile and create a shortcut like so,
firefox.exe -profile "E:\path\to\my\profile\"
which will allow you to run multiple instances of the Firefox browser. Something that might come in handy for the developers.

Windows XP and Addressing 4GB of Memory

With my new computer I now have have 4GB of memory but my System Properties dialog is only displaying 3.25GB (3,406,892K. I went searching for the answer yesterday as to why since Microsoft officially says that 32Bit versions of Windows can support up to 4GB of memory.

The issue stems in the fact that for every bit of information in memory it must have an address to point to it. The number of possible addresses is based on the amount of bits the CPU is running on. Every bit gives you two possible combinations. When you add a second it goes up to 4 for every 2. So on and so forth.

The math: 2^32 = 4,294,967,296

The problem though, is that the CPU can not only address the memory. It also has to talk to the other things on the motherboard, PCI devices, USB hubs, IDE connectors, and the like....

The BIOS automatically addresses all the bits the peripherals need first and then assigns the remaining bits to the memory.

Seems like I'll have to get a 64Bit OS for when I get another 4GB. 64Bit versions of Vista and XP have a memory limit in the terabytes.

4GB of DDR2
9600 graphics card
Motherboard supports 6 SATA connections. 10 USB 2.0 connections. 2 Firewire. 2 Network Adapters. A built in 8.1 surround sound sound card.

I installed XP on it. I'll probably put Vista on it as well in a dual boot config so I can try out DX10. No real driver issues at all with XP.

So far I tried Half-Life 2 on full settings in 1600x1200 with FPS staying above 60 at all times. Though the PC did crash at one part (airboat helicopter fight). I assume this is a driver inconsistency and it happened more then once so I don't feel like trying it again till I see a new driver with a bug fix for the source engine. Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock also play really well on full settings. I have yet to try Crysis yet but I will.

Teaching PHP & AJAX Web Development

On April 1st I'll be teaching a seminar at my university on PHP & AJAX (with Prototype Framework). I'm attempting to do a good job on the "teaching" part since this might actually push for them to add it to the curriculum after I show them what's actually doable with it.

I'm gonna be using a Powerpoint in conjunction with some diagrams I'm gonna draw on the board to explain Client / Server, how HTTP works with PHP, and how it all relates back to actual web development. See Power Point here [pptx].

My approach is to first give some background and explain how much the LAMP stack can scale (PHP,Apache,MySQL,PHP) by showing them sites that rely on it on an everyday basis. Wikipedia, Facebook, etc. All these sites handle millions of visitors an hour and yet are quick and responsive. I'm going to then move onto explaining what Web 2.0 is and what AJAX is without confusing the crap out of people and leaving them even more confused after then when they got there, as most places that try to explain it tend to become. Finally once it's all done I'm going to code from scratch a Content Management System over a series of these seminars in a tutorial fashion.

On the first one if I get through the slide and have time (only 1 hour 30 minutes), I'll do a simple flat files page editor with no login authentication but using AJAX so it will explain includes, $_GET, and $_POST in PHP while teaching AJAX.Request in Prototype as well as onclick event linking.
On the second seminar I plan to add Login authentication to the mix. This will teach headers, cookies, encryption, salting an encryption, and databases using MySQL.
If there's more I'll just keep improving the CMS more and more, maybe eventually showing them URL Rewrites using mod_rewrite in Apache or Lighttpd.

What do you guys think?

RPC Service Crashing in Windows XP and Google's Not Helping

Every so often through the daily uses of my laptop I have to disconnect my Wifi or Ethernet while the laptop is on. No biggy right? Well Windows doesn't seem to think so. Every so often when I either forcefully disconnect the ethernet either wired or wifi the RPC Service in my XP install crashes and then I see this:
[URL=http://img169.imageshack.us/my.php?image=rpccrashlw5pp4.png][IMG]http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/459/rpccrashlw5pp4.th.png[/IMG][/URL]

Now for those that don't know what the RPC service in Windows XP does well it does pretty much every secondary service you take for granted. Copy/paste would not work across different programs without it. It also handles network, the process of connecting to and from a network, as well as audio and some other secondary systems for USB peripherals. And I'm only scratching the surface. The effect from the crash basically disables the socket connection for the clipboard for every running program. Some like Dreamweaver recover themselves after a few minutes. Others like Firefox; don't. It's not wonder that Microsoft made it so that you had to restart instead of trying to fix the issue with good programming.

So far here's my way to fix this without restarting:
First off you have to not panic. You only have 60 seconds to act so you have to get into command prompt and type in: shutdown -a. This will abort the shutdown. The next thing you have to do is restart the RPC service. There are actually two seperate services you need to start. To do this, also in command prompt:

net start rpcss
net start rpclocator

This will get you back running and have things like clipboard (copy/paste) back up. On my machine it also causes a run away memory leak (20kbytes added to it's stamp) in the Nvidia driver exe (nvsvc32.exe) as well as 15 and 35% CPU usage. I have to restart this exe (it's a service so just restart it in the services control panel [Start > Run > Services.msc]) to fix it. After forgetting this step one time I opened task manager to find a 500 megabyte behemoth which normally runs with a 4 megabyte memory stamp.

Unfortunatly I still see bugs I don't know how to fix from the result of this crash and Google isn't very helpful. Almost all the results are for the msblaster worm which caused this crash forcefully a few years back. My crash is clearly not because of msblaster but has a very different catalyst.

Anyone know anymore steps I can take?

Firefox 3 Beta 2

I decided to take Firefox 3 for a spin last night when I read a few articles about it's improved rendering engine, Gecko.

[URL=http://img149.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ff3lh2.png][IMG]http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/9995/ff3lh2.th.png[/IMG][/URL]

When it comes to software I generally like using what does the job best using the least amount of memory and least amount of CPU power but in the case of Firefox I generally came to like using it better then IE. Over a few months of using both browsers at the same time for various different tasks I eventually switched completely over to Firefox.

Firefox 3 has a few interesting changes to the interface but generally it's the same old Firefox that I know and love. I've been using it since yesterday while coding and the usual ugly memory monster hasn't come out yet. Right now after a few hours of browsing I'm still at a comfortable 112MB of memory used. The memory usage even goes down by a sizable chunk when I close a tab or a window!

Despite it being in beta it hasn't really crashed on me or anything like that. So far I've been all over, MSNBC, Slashdot, Gmail, all over Artician, etc etc etc. No problems. I really feel that it's ready for release. The developer wiki on Mozilla still has about 100 "priority 1" bugs left but I'm sure they'll be taken care of by February. I can't wait.

The one thing I really wanted while coding was Firebug, since almost all the plugins are currently not working I went out to see if there was maybe a beta available since most web developers in the know can't live without it; and sure enough here it is: http://fireclipse.xucia.com/

Kudos to Mozilla for stepping up and cementing their browser as true quality software.

Finally! Correct Here Doc (<<<EOF) parsing in Dreamweaver for PHP

I did a little bit of research and didn't find much on the topic of correct color highlighting of Here Docs. A 'Here Document' is a way of placing pure text without fear of syntax directly into the heart of a document with strict syntax rules which is basically the case with almost any scripting or programming language. In PHP the way to do this is:
<div class="codetop"">

print <<< EOF

EOF;

Wikipedia has a great entry explaining all about Here Documents and PHP.net explains in it's documentation under Strings.

The problem with Dreamweaver is that Macromedia's DW team overlooked syntax highlighting for the Here Docs as pure PHP and choose not to treat it differently from the rest of the PHP. In hindsight this might have been a cleaner design decision but the fact is that people use here docs and the text within a here doc is almost always not PHP and in my experience is almost always HTML or XML. Occasionally JavaScript might find it's way in there as well.

After seeing a completely custom Code Coloring XML file for Dreamweaver for the Smarty templating system I decided to poke and prod around and try to hack together a correct color coding solution for my way of doing templating on Artician which is like so:
<div class="codetop"">

<?php
$TEMPLATE = <<< EOF

EOF;

function makeHTML() {
global $TEMPLATE;
db_q("SELECT `link`,`title`,`image` FROM table"
while($row = db_r()) {
$temp = str_replace('{LINK}',$row['link'],$TEMPLATE);
$temp = str_replace('{TITLE}',$row['title'],$temp);
$temp = str_replace('{IMAGE}',$row['image'],$temp);
$output .= $temp;
}
return $output;
}
?>

<?php
echo makeHTML();
?>

I've been using the above method on Artician for over a year now and all along using Dreamweaver with very unwieldy text coloring when the here doc shows up. If I had an unclosed single or double quote in the here doc then PHP would continue it, treating it like a very long string. I can of course fix this by placing a comment with a closer quote but this is just a quick hack for a problem that should not even be there in the first place.

Never the less, here's the fix:
Open: Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Dreamweaver CS3\configuration\CodeColoring\PHP.xml
(I'm not sure about Dreamweaver MX and 8 but I'd assume it would be the same.)
Go down to Line 18 and find:
<div class="codetop"">

<blockEnd></blockEnd>

Copy and Paste the following on the next line (Don't remove what was there, instead hit enter a few times and make room):
<div class="codetop"">

<blockStart doctypes="PHP_MySQL" scheme="customText"><?phps</blockStart>
And now we've got some better looking code and Dreamweaver treats all the code inside the Here doc as if it wasn't inside of it at all.

Saturday at Otakon

This is my first Anime con so I really didn't know what to expect. Rather I knew what to expect but I didn't really KNOW what would really happen and such. Unfortunatly I was only able to stay for the start of Saturday and I only attended one panel which was the One Piece panel.

At the start of the day we got straight in line for the Vendor area. We we're some of the first to get in there and we stumbled upon a screening of Freedom in HD on a 70 some inch Plasma. Considering the amazing animation, visuals, and 3D mastery put into this OVA it was quite a treat to see it in HD.

Afterwards mayhem ensued as we basically ran around snapping pictures while checking out anime paraphernalia (note to self: next time bring more money). Afterwards we went up to the third floor for a Panel on One Piece. Expecting a dubbed screening (premier) of some newly dubbed episodes we were disappointed with a very ensightful look at the people behind the American adaptation of One Piece after the 4kids debacle by Funimation.

I'm sad to report that despite their apparent attentiveness to fans when it comes to cleaning up the series and releasing uncut DVDs they are still completely clueless as it seems most of the dubbing community is.

And now a rant.....

You would think it would be required viewing to watch recent episodes as they air of an anime you are actively working on just as a Harry Potter book might be required reading for the same movie but when Brina Palencia was asked about her main character signature move (Rumble Ball transformations) she was at a complete loss. Despite the fact that this technique is basically the corner stone of the character's fighting power.

Clearly the staff at Funimation need to download some fansubs and take a page or two out of their fansubbing communities' book and do their research for once. It took one wikipedia for me to pull up enough information on this one character to blast Ms. Palencia for not knowing. Clearly when Wikipedia knows more about the character you're trying to portray then you-yourself; there's something wrong.

Ms. Palencia,
Like all of your colleagues the one thing you lack is clearly not talent but tact. Yes cute has it's place and of course has a very large base in many characters; especially Tony Tony Chopper but the fact of the matter is he's a character who is not only a reindeer but an actual doctor. His hobby is not to play plush toy to fangirls everywhere but to read and study medicine. For this reason please understand the difference between fun and games and serious plot lines and events. If you can't have a serious discussion using you're current chopper voice then no matter how many times the Japanese approve your voices and episodes the audience will still not respond for which you have been so vehemently striving: the fan's dollar.

Thanks but no thanks, I'll stick to my fansubs.

~End Rant

I had to leave soon after I had the above epiphany but as I went down I saw at least thirty people along the corridors of the Baltimore Convention Center reading Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows while being at an Anime convention. Funny how the dates line up. "These people are lucky I thought", as I observed them reading. Seeing as how most of them were so engrossed in the book it was clear to me that they were reading for the first time. Lucky them.... I think I'll get back to my second reading right about .... now.

Google Should Have Waited - Youtube who? Stage6 has the future on lockdown

In every sense of the word, I am a complete and bonafide nerd. How do I know this? Well I happen to be one of those crazy people that will drool over computer graphics and actually read about benchmarks. I will see a video and care if it's an HD or not. And because of all these different things, when I visit YouTube a nagging question arises in the back of my head - Why are all these videos looking like they came straight out of the pages of Real Media nightmare from the AOL era?

Up till now these questions were only answered by movie studios which liked to spend the money on the bandwidth to put their movie trailers on the internet. Even the technology has been out there for a while, Flash, Quicktime, Windows Media Player, and of course Real Player but if you ever wanted good high quality videos you would either have to dish out the money for it or download the media using illegitimate means (Bittorrent, Gnuttella network).

Recently however, Divx, the company that developed Divx has put out a browser plugin that allows you to stream Divx and play them directly in your browser over a run of the mill HTTP connection (and it's available for Firefox and Internet Explorer). It's not only (extremely) light weight but it also lets you automatically save played videos to a folder for playback later in any player, including the Divx player for a normal desktop machine.

Whether or not it is financially viable for a company to keep this up is another matter entirely though. YouTube according to industry analysts is still not making any money for Google despite the two billion cost and yet the phenomenon of other video services popping up around it is hard to dismiss. In the old days of the internet if someone sent you a link to a video and it was something popular, the hosting server would probably get hammered into a denial-of-service but these days there's so many sources to get your fix from it's hard to kill many of these video companies. So maybe this is indeed a blessing in disguise. Many video services can thrive but one will surely die and again this is only for now....

The future of the internet is one of endless bandwidth and that day is sooner then you think. Ten years ago sending an image was a big deal; five years ago it was music; and today we are sharing video. There's no other type of media that takes more bandwidth then video and ten years from now? Let's just say that streaming Bluray / HD-DVD quality video will be as simple and easy as sending one picture.

In the end the winners will be those that bring quality, ease-of-use, and performance to the masses as quickly as possible because the nerds are the ones that notice and despite what people might think, it is the nerds that control what gets popular on the internet. This is why MySpace is nothing but a fad just like AOL once was; and will inevitably fail for the same reason. It won't happen overnight but people's internet surfing habits are hard to influence in the first place. This future that I'm talking about is one of endless media. More media will be created and watched daily then any one person can even comprehend in a thousand life times; and as the internet expands beyond the walls of the developed nations of the world that too will cause the media flow to explode many times more fold. Finally after all this bandwidth comes into play and becomes available we will again find ourselves in a world where anyone can download anything faster than they can watch it which will create the biggest, but unstoppable train of illegal media which the MPAA and RIAA will be powerless to stop. Well, at least you can expect movie tickets and concert tickets to go up. Those are the only ways the music / movie industries would be able to make money.

So what will probably happen? I don't know. No one knows. That's what's so fun about tracking the internet. You think you know what's coming but then Digg, or Google, or Slashdot, or 4chan comes running in and surprising you with the next fad.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu claimed my Wednesday.

I was looking at videos of Beryl and said to myself; "I must have this". Despite the fact that I'm perfectly happy on my Windows XP machine, or that my XP is so custom setup with a special command line terminal and cygwin, or that I know it so well inside and out, I still want crazy effects damn it!

So I went and did research on it for two hours. Can I run Dreamweaver in Linux? What about test internet explorer? Wait how do I burn CDs in linux? Will my Audigy 2 Platinum work? After finding out the answer to all of those was a Yes. (You can even install Office 2003 and Internet Explorer 4,5,6, and 7!)

After I decided to try it out I installed Partition Magic 8.1 and set myself up ready to partition my F: drive for 30 GB of Ubuntu. 2GB on swap and the rest on / and /home. Sounds great.... until I get a 1513 error. Even after pulling a CHKDSK /F it still gives the error but since I already downloaded Ubuntu 6.10 and I would need to load up Knoppix for QParted anyway I figured what the heck and I burned both and restarted to see how the install of Ubuntu 6.10 is.

About 30 seconds into loading the operating system from disk (Yes, Ubuntu's install loads the OS from a LiveCD and you install in the OS itself) it crashes at the loading screen.... consistently. So now I'm back in Windows and after asking some people I find out that apparently version 7.04 of Ubuntu, the supposedly Beta version of it, is more stable on the hardware end with better hardware support. So I download this and load it up. Works great and all! I even tried out playing One Piece HD RAW 303 of my NTFS drive and it worked flawlessly. But now back into Knoppix, it doesn't even detect my drive that I want partitioned....

So much for that. By now it's 6AM and I'm so beat so I just called it quits. Next time it will take more then pretty graphics to get me to go through this.....

Video & Media in a Web 2.0 World: The Game is Changing

Today I read quite a few articles on Web 2.0 and marveled at the likes of Google, YouTube, and Digg. Interestingly enough the timing was quite perfect as NBC and FOX announced a joint venture today for bringing video to the masses. At the same time you've got Viacom's billion dollar lawsuit against Youtube (which Youtube is probably going to win because of DMCA).

All this is great for consumers as it will spur plenty of good things. Among them, net neutrality, competition, better, and cheaper features but on the other hand I have to stop back and think to myself whether or not NBC will succeed. Power to them but Youtube didn't just spring up over night. They took advantage of well known Web 2.0 technologies and they understood how the online community works.

It's not just about being entertained but also about sharing the entertainment and then once you share it to talk about it. This is why any YouTube video can be posted in any forum with BBCode or with HTML code and why when you actually view the video you can rate it, tag it, and comment on it. Although NBC might make a great website with all the bells and whistles to view good programming unless there's a good community fan base it's not gonna get far. I'm sure it will be profitable but it won't reach the top 10 most visited websites on the Internet. Of which at the moment is a very exclusive club and YouTube happened to clutch it's position at number four. Good luck to NBC and Viacom but if history is a window into the future then they already lost the battle.

I've Got Beef

	Is it just me or are tech companies with a proven track record trying to undo their own good reputation just to get it back again? I feel like I’m in the twighlight zone. I don’t normally complain. I look at it from both points of view. No it’s not Microsoft’s fault when you get a blue screen of death. It is usually the manufacturer of device that failed, the driver that failed, the computer that failed, or the piece of software you were running that failed. Ok Ok fine…… the other 1% of the time maybe it is Microsoft’s fault. But let’s be honest here; if Bill knew all the bugs in the 100,000 some lines of code in Windows he wouldn’t be CEO of Microsoft. He’d instead be working the stock market knowing ahead of time what’s going to happen (making more money than he is now) so stop blaming the guy for someone else’s mistakes damn it.
But I digress; my real beef is with those stupid decisions that go unchecked by stupid (unqualified) people in important positions. First, if Asus’ USA Website Webmaster is reading this: GO AND FIX YOUR WEBSITE. No I do not want a new window to open every time I click support. I first bought an Asus motherboard in 2002. It was an A7V266-E. I loved it. I love everything about it. Getting drivers was a joke. The website was fantastic. Since then I the Asus website has gotten worse with every year. Maybe this is my punishment for that one MSI board I got…yea the one that fried after a month….

Next on my list is Adobe. Adobe is the big fish on my list; a big BAD fish. Seriously guys, what gives? Adobe was good around the time of Photoshop 7. Now it just makes me want to question that Macromedia buy out. Around the time Macromedia Flash became Adobe Flash; the internet; as a whole got a lot more dangerous and Adobe as a whole; got a lot more pompous. What the hell am I talking about, you ask? O why only the shit they call software Adobe has been releasing lately. Today I was installing Adobe Reader 8 on my laptop (with Vista) so I could read a PDF. And two minutes into the install I questioned whether anyone at Adobe actually tried installing the program on Vista before releasing it. Maybe this just happened to me but honestly what the hell. After the initial install file uncompressed the real installer from its self and placed it into the temporary windows folder it failed to launch giving me an error telling me the temporary folder was full. As if the installer requires any writing back to the temporary folder. Being good at computers I grabbed the location of the running executable from Task Manager after it displayed an error and without hitting OK on the error I copied the executable before it could delete itself. Lovely. And what was the total time to start up the program from nothing? 2 Seconds. What? Not everything about this new version is bad. But I must say. Would someone at Adobe please tell the people who make the installers to make a checkbox for “Would you like to install Adobe Speed Launch?” I realize you’re making this for stupid people but the tech guys got to use it too…..

Ah yes Nvidia, how I love you so. You have never failed me before but now you did. Why oh why? You knew Vista was coming. We called it Longhorn back then but even so you failed so horribly at being prepared.

And finally Hewlett-Packard is the last on my list (for now). I realize you make no money making drivers for five year old products but I also don’t need one of your printers as a paper weight. I have plenty of your ink cartridges for that. No Vista drivers for my Photosmart 1000? Fine, there are plenty of other printers on the market as well.
